Freda started the day strong. When I arrived in the morning she was sitting on a chair beside her bed looking great. But things took a downward turn as the day progressed. After an hour in the chair she was exhausted and resistant to participating in her swallowing therapy, though ultimately, with the help of a wonderful lung doc (Ryan Pavlovich, NYU, should you ever be in need), she participated. But getting through the day was a struggle.
She has lots of goop in her lungs but is so weak that she can't really cough it out, so that keeps her in the high-monitoring room (which she hates) in order to get the stuff suctioned out frequently, an unpleasant process. Plus her veins aren't holding up so well with the IV. And she pulled out the nasal feeding tube which she'd agreed to yesterday. She's an incredibly tough woman with a high threshold for pain, but has never been a particularly patient person. She can't eat or speak and her frustration is palpable.
Of course she has rallied in amazing ways before, but Steve is going to talk with Freda and her doctors tomorrow morning to re-assess.
